Light is a universal symbol of hope, renewal, and the advent of something new—which is why it has always been a central part of New Year's Eve. This year, too, fireworks lit up the skies over world metropolises from Sydney to Dubai to New York, where thousands of people waited for midnight to watch the light show and celebrate the arrival of the New Year.

Traditional New Year's Eve fireworks

For many decades, fireworks have been an integral symbol of New Year's Eve celebrations worldwide. Sydney, for example, is renowned for one of the largest New Year's Eve fireworks displays ever. People here often head out to find the best spots as early as the morning to watch the colorful spectacle against the backdrop of the iconic Sydney Opera House and the famous Harbour Bridge.. Dubai also offered spectacular celebrations, welcoming the year 2026 with a record-breaking 48 fireworks shows. These lit up the sky not only above the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa, but also above other significant locations throughout the city.

However, this visual tradition also has less visible but serious consequences. Fireworks significantly increase the concentration of fine particulate matter in the air, especially so-called PM2.5. These particles, which have a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less—roughly thirty times smaller than the width of a human hair—easily penetrate deep into the lungs and can enter the bloodstream. Long-term exposure is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, asthma, stroke, and premature death. Among the sources of these pollutants are metal compounds used to create the colorful effects of fireworks, such as barium, strontium, or copper, which are released into the air during the explosions.

Transition to modern LED light shows

With growing awareness of the negative impacts of fireworks on the environment, animals, and human health, cities and organizers of large events are increasingly turning to alternatives that do not involve combustion, yet can still offer an impressive visual spectacle.

Alongside traditional pyrotechnics, LED projections and light installations are coming to the forefront, capable of creating dynamic and attractive effects without explosions and smoke. A significant trend in recent years has been drone light shows. Coordinated fleets of drones equipped with LEDs can create complex animations, text, or shapes in the night sky, without direct air pollution, chemical fallout, and with minimal noise. This makes these shows much gentler on wildlife and pets, which are often stressed by loud detonations.

Another ecologically friendly alternative is laser shows and projection mapping, which use only light instead of explosives, with urban architecture or natural scenery serving as the projection screen. These technologies enable visual storytelling and the creation of a unique atmosphere with minimal environmental impact.

Drone light shows

Technological advancements have ushered in a new era of light shows – the choreography of thousands of LED drones that can paint shapes, symbols, or messages across the night sky. However, not every country has incorporated drones into its official New Year's celebrations, despite frequent claims that they represent the future of large public festivities.

China - Chongqing

In the city of Chongqing, a massive drone show featuring 8,000 drones was prepared for the 2025-2026 New Year's celebrations, synchronized with laser projections and other light effects throughout the city. The show began on December 31st at 11:25 PM and lasted approximately 50 minutes. Organizers conceived it as a unique three-dimensional integrated „water-land-air“ performance, connecting modern technology with the urban landscape. Spectators were also presented for the first time with specially designed patterns themed around the Year of the Horse, intended to symbolically bring good luck and New Year's blessings.

United Arab Emirates – Dubai

The New Year's Eve celebrations in the United Arab Emirates were also very impressive. Although Dubai is the most famous emirate, which continues to rely on traditional fireworks, modern technologies are gradually finding their way into local celebrations as well.

The most remarkable New Year's celebrations, however, took place in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. Here, organizers combined classic pyrotechnics with drone technology to create a breathtaking visual spectacle – first, a giant phoenix in flight appeared in the night sky, followed by a monumental human figure. This combination of fireworks and drones demonstrated how traditional elements of celebration can be merged with modern technologies, elevating the New Year's Eve experience to an entirely new level.

Thailand

In Thailand, New Year's celebrations were dominated by traditional pyrotechnic shows, yet some cities, such as Bangkok, are experimenting with expensive light projections and digitized visual effects that enrich New Year's Eve celebrations with a modern element.

Pattaya Beach attracted the most attention, where the new year 2026 was welcomed with a breathtaking drone show. Coordinated flight formations lit up the night sky, literally stunning the spectators. The captivating visual effects gave the Thai celebrations a futuristic touch, demonstrating how a combination of traditional and modern technologies can create a truly magnificent New Year's welcome.

Ecological aspects of light festivals

While traditional fireworks offer a visual spectacle, their environmental impact is significant, including air pollution, increased PM2.5 levels, and heavy metal emissions. For this reason, some countries have opted for alternatives for 2026, such as silent pyrotechnics, light shows, and drone choreography, to create celebrations that are friendlier to people, animals, and the environment.

The future of New Year's Eve lighting

The trend suggests that lighting technologies will continue to play an increasing role in New Year's celebrations. Drone shows offer an innovative way to visually express wishes and stories that traditional fireworks cannot. Especially in a time of growing environmental responsibility, LED and drone projections can be a way to celebrate with light without negative impacts on air and wildlife.

Conclusion:

Light, as a symbol of welcoming a new beginning, connects old traditions with new technologies. While fireworks remain a spectacular means of celebration, modern light and drone shows offer more sustainable and creative ways to welcome the New Year — and the world is thus looking towards a future where light shines brighter and more innovatively than ever before.
